Why Wales and the Midlands seem to get more rain and flash flooding than other parts of the UK

Two areas of the country seem to be suffering from more heavy rain and flash flooding than elsewhere … Wales and the Midlands.

The two areas keep getting battered with storms and torrential downpours, leading to severe flooding causing millions of pounds of water damage to homes and businesses.

Councils in Wales and the Midlands have been ordering FloodSax alternative sandbags to protect civic buildings and possibly distribute to people in dire emergencies as they are space saving to store, quick and easy to deploy and means people can be prepared for flooding 24/7.

The heavy rain is all down to weather systems sweeping in from the Atlantic Ocean.

Wales receives high rainfall due to its location in the path of prevailing westerly winds from the Atlantic which are full of moisture. The country’s mountainous terrain forces this moist air to rise, cool and condense into rain clouds, a process known as orographic lift.

The wet weather in the Midlands is also linked to the Welsh mountain ranges which force the air to rise, cool and produce rain. The combination of these factors, coupled with a general tendency for Atlantic low-pressure systems to bring wet weather to the UK, results in a higher rainfall for the Midlands.

FloodSax were devised and manufactured by Environmental Defence Systems Ltd based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

Lucy Bailey from EDS said: “We have seen a sharp rise in orders for FloodSax from both Wales and the Midlands in recent weeks so it’s clear these area have been hardest hit by the rain and storms.

“It’s a pattern we’ve seen before and it keeps on repeating. Wales and the Midlands – especially areas such as Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Birmingham – seem to suffer dreadfully from torrential downpours which often lead to flash flooding and severe water damage to homes and businesses.

“Although some councils do have stocks of FloodSax, people need to be aware that local authorities have absolutely no responsibility to provide old-style sandbags, modern alternative sandbags like FloodSax or any other anti-flooding devices to people.

“The Environment Agency has made it clear that people are responsible for protecting their own properties from flooding so anyone living in an area prone to severe rainfall and flash flooding needs a box of 20 FloodSax so they are prepared any time of the day or night and at major holiday times such as Christmas when it’s virtually impossible to get hold of flood protection when flooding is imminent.

“We have seen a huge surge in demand since the dry spell came to an end and the forecast now is rain and snow which will also cause potential flooding when it melts.”

FloodSax are unique as they can also be used indoors to prevent costly flood damage. In their dry state the gelling polymer inside FloodSax can quickly soak up water dripping or leaking inside buildings to stop damage from spreading.

Immerse them fully in water and they absorb the water and retain it, transforming them into instant sandbags but without any sand so they are more environmentally friendly than traditional sandbags.
