Upsurge in demand for FloodSax alternative sandbags after heavy rain causes UK flooding

Flooding across parts of the midlands and southern England has led to a major upsurge in requests for a sandless sandbag renowned worldwide for protecting homes and businesses.

The FloodSax is now stocked at well-known retailers such as Travis Perkins, Cromwell, Aspli, Slingsby, Kingfisher Direct and Spillcraft.

They were devised by Environmental Defence Systems Ltd based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, and around 3 million have been sold worldwide since 2007.

Lucy Bailey from Environmental Defence Systems Ltd said: “We know where it has been flooding and where FloodSax are regarded as really useful by the requests we get from suppliers for more stock.

“It’s clear that the London area has been suffering from rain recently and the FloodSax are particularly useful for people living in urban flats where there is more chance of heavy rain, burst water mains, rising groundwater levels and plumbing problems to cause flooding inside and out.”

FloodSax come in handy vacuum-packs of five so are very space-saving to store yet quick and easy to deploy.

Lucy added: “They are very popular in big cities such as London where a lot of people live in basement flats below pavement level. When London suffers severe flash flooding as it did twice in the summer of 2021, the water pours down steps and straight into their homes. A pack of five FloodSax can prevent this and all the needless human misery, hassle and incredibly high costs of repairing the damage.”

Unlike sandbags, FloodSax are the ultimate multi-purpose anti-flooding product and cost less than pre-filled sandbags with the retail price now around £140 for 20 which is enough to protect most homes.

In their dry state they are a very flat, absorbent pad with a large surface area so their absorbent gelling polymer can soak up leaks, spills and floods indoors, even in the hardest-to-reach places such as beneath boilers, below radiators and underneath pipes.

Floodsax prevent leaking water getting onto floors, furniture and electrics, wrecking them and causing thousands of pounds damage.

But immerse FloodSax fully in water and they will absorb up to 20 litres and retain it so the FloodSax is transformed into an instant ‘sandbag’ but without any sand.

FloodSax are largely biodegradable so can be disposed of in landfill once they have been used.

Many people are shocked to learn that local councils have no responsibility to provide sandbags if a flood is imminent.

The Environment Agency makes this very clear by warning: “Don’t assume the authorities will provide you with sandbags in a flood emergency. It is the responsibility of property owners to take appropriate action to protect their property from flooding.”

Lucy added: “People are amazed that the relatively small cost of £140 for 20 FloodSax can save them literally tens of thousands of pounds in water damage if their property floods. It also means they have full protection whenever they need it, day and night along with weekends and bank holidays when people would find it virtually impossible to find any flood protection at short notice.”
