The fastest, cheapest and most effective way to stop sewage backing up into your home or business through your toilet

The terrible storms over the last few months have caused flash flooding which can push raw sewage back up into your home or business.

The mess it causes is a truly horrific health hazard with sewage wrecking absolutely everything it touches. The clean-up afterwards will be a nightmare and probably need a deep clean by a professional company.

There is a quick, easy and simple solution to stop this in the first place … just one FloodSax alternative sandbag pushed down into your toilet.

FloodSax are instant sandbags but in their dry state are incredibly flat and only become sandless sandbags when they are immersed in water which the polymer inside them absorbs and retains.

This means they can be used to soak up leaks and spills, especially in hard-to-reach places such as beneath sinks, under radiators or below boilers.

If you pop just one FloodSax down the toilet the FloodSax will absorb the water and expand to block any sewage backing up. Once the emergency is over, simply remove the floodbag.

FloodSax managing director Richard Bailey said: “Many people don’t think of the impact of flooding on the sewer system but unfortunately it happens quite regularly. With all the recent storms it’s become a major problem from the autumn of 2023 into the winter of 2024 and the huge rise in groundwater flooding is making the situation even worse.

“When an area suffers badly from flooding – or the sewage pipes get blocked – the water down there can quickly back-up and its only escape is back up through the toilet.”

Boxes of FloodSax cost around £140 for 20 so each FloodSax will only be about £7, a tiny price to pay to prevent potentially catastrophic flooding that will be a fortune to repair.

The excess on house insurance for flooding is typically around £350 so it makes no sense not to have flood prevention measures on hand 24 hours a day and seven days a week and FloodSax provide that peace of mind.

What are the causes of sewage backing up into your home or business?

Severe rain can cause water levels to rise in underground drainage systems, rivers and streams, forcing water to back up and sending sewage back into homes and businesses.

Yorkshire Water states: “If weather conditions are extreme, like a major storm, we can’t guarantee a sewer won’t flood or leak.”

People pour all kinds of things down the kitchen sink they shouldn’t such as fat, oil and grease which harden as they cool and can clog sewers. They form thick layers inside sewers constricting the flow in the same way that cholesterol restricts blood flow in our arteries.

When these layers get really big they are known as fatbergs which can totally clog sewers, sending raw sewage into the streets and back up into homes and businesses. Thames Water discovered one in the Whitechapel area of London in 2017 that was 800ft long, weighed around 130 tons and was the size of 11 double-decker buses.

People are also to blame for flushing things down the toilet that should be thrown away such as baby wipes, make-up wipes, sanitary products, paper towels and even nappies. Only the three Ps – pee, poo and toilet paper should be flushed down toilets.

Another reason is the fact that the sewer may have collapsed. Tree roots are known to damage sewers as they grow by punching holes into the pipes or even curling around and crushing them.
