24 boxes each containing 20 FloodSax on a pallet
You can fit almost 30,000 FloodSax alternative sandbags into the back of an articulated lorry
Sandbags are certainly no fun to store and deploy
Here’s a pallet of 24 boxes of FloodSax (left) – that’s 480 individual FloodSax – which you could easily get into a small van or even squeeze into the back of a large people carrier.
But if you had 480 traditional sandbags you’d have to use a lorry … or two, or three or maybe even four.
For the sheer weight and size of sandbags means you can only put 150 sandbags on a 7.5-tonne lorry so you’d need four lorries to shift your 480 sandbags.
Then you’d need a significant workforce to get them off the lorry and carry them to the scene of a potential flood which will stretch their arms, backs and patience to breaking point.
With the FloodSax you’ll need just one person as each box of 20 is easy for an individual to lift, carry, load, unload and then deploy at the scene of a potential flood.
It’s just one of the many reasons why councils, hospitals, businesses and people throughout the UK and worldwide now turn to FloodSax alternative sandbags rather than the old sand ones.
FloodSax are made by Yorkshire company Environmental Defence Systems Ltd and director Lucy Bailey says: “Sandbags are incredibly heavy and very difficult, time-consuming and expensive to store and shift anywhere. It means you can only fit a few even on lorries and hardly any on vans and cars due to the weight on the axles. Obviously, driving around in overloaded vehicles makes them dangerously unsafe and illegal.
“Yet the FloodSax are so lightweight before they are transformed into sandbags they can be taken to the scene in cars or light vans or you can transport thousands on a lorry.’’
A box of 20 FloodSax weighs just 21lbs (9.5kilos) which means a 40ft-high lorry container can take 1,496 boxes of FloodSax if loose-packed – that’s almost 30,000 individual FloodSax.
An articulated lorry would be fully loaded with just 1,800 sandbags … and that would be pushing it.
Lucy adds: “This is just one of the ways FloodSax beat sandbags hands down and why the world is now turning to FloodSax as the temporary flood barrier of choice.’’
Unlike traditional sandbags, FloodSax are unique in that they work inside to soak up internal floods, leaks and escapes of water and outside as instant sandless sandbags.
In their dry state, FloodSax are super-absorbent yet thin with a large surface area so are highly effective at soaking up drips, leaks, spills and floods inside homes and businesses, especially in hard-to-reach places such as beneath pipes, radiators, sinks and boilers. They also soak up floodwater dripping in through leaky roofs and windows.
They are transformed into tough and robust sandless sandbags when they are immersed in water which the gelling polymer inside absorbs and retains in around five minutes so they weigh around 20kg.
FloodSax are so much easier and cost-effective to store than sandbags which can deteriorate in cold warehouses and FloodSax are a multi-purpose product that works inside and out, unlike sandbags that are one-dimensional. After all, they're just sandbags for outdoor use and, even then, have been proved to be ineffective at keeping floodwater out of homes and businesses.
